A combo counter slowly dwindles and when it finally times out Shark is awarded points for his successive moves and his health is even restored upon touching down on the ground for a moment.

The gameplay and combo system is designed to encourage fast, non-stop flying action as Shark freezes a series of enemies, latches on and dives through them and continues bounding forward to the next batch. With swift timing, the sword can also be used to deflect enemy fire, freezing them in their tracks. Once frozen, Shark can latch onto enemies with the Plasma Chain, diving straight towards them with his sword, and destroy them for points and a boost in momentum. The particular enemies in ChainDive can be frozen just by approaching Shark's swinging, spinning blade but cannot be destroyed by it. Shark also has a double jump that can be activated at any time.įor attack and defense, Shark carries a glowing purple-blue, double-ended sword.

For example, latching onto an orb from below will propel Shark upward but his trajectory can always be influenced by moving the left analog stick. Once attached, his momentum and the left analog stick can be used to adjust his swing. The player character, Shark, carries the 'Plasma Chain' which allows him to latch onto the plentiful green orbs that populate the levels. The camera pans, zooms and tilts during scripted sequences and in-game cut scenes but the gameplay remains solely 2D. ChainDive, developed by Japan's Alvion and released on PlayStation 2 in October of 2003, is played from a 2.5D perspective with 3D visuals and backgrounds locked on the 2D plane. Its well worth coming back to it every now and then to have a quick blast!.Īwesome insta gaming.
Ps2 chaindive ps2#
This was a game I saw alot if adverts on VJUMP magazines back in 2003 and bought it after I finally got a Japanese PS2 during high school. The game plays very smoothly and fast, and its extremely satisfying to travel though the stages, swinging with your grappling hook and shattering enemies to bits The interesting thing is that the sword is not what you use to attack enemies with, but it rather freezes them and turns enemies into grappling points which you can latch onto and make them shatter. This is a 2.5D side-scrolling action game where you control 'Shark', a warrior equipped with a grappling hook and a sword. This is a relatively well known game in terms of Japanese exclusives on the PS2, and for a very good reason, its simply FANTASTIC and very much playable for non Japanese readers. A 3rd game made by Alvion through the 'Game Yarouze!' Game design Competition after Sarcadia and Poinie Poin. Japan Exclusive 'High Speed Chain Action' game. 🎮 Japan Exclusive Games: チェインダイブ / Chain Dive. #chaindive #ps2 #hiddengem #playstation2 #japanesegame #retrogamer #playstation #chaincombo #instagamer #gamestagram #gamecollection #gamesroom The game is going up in value due to a combination of it being good and a Japan only release, prices currently between £60 - £90. I have included a couple of videos showing the basic mobility and also a vid of just how insane the game can get!! When you freeze an enemy with an attack you can then grapple hook their frozen body to pull yourself into them for a grapple strike! This allows you to keep up the combo. Think of it like an elastic band, pull back and release the hook at the right time to gain crazy height and distance! To do this you utilise the grappling hook and the unbelievable momentum it can give you when used properly. The main aspect of the game is the chain system, using the insane mobility to keep your chain kills going as long as possible. Think the Guyver mixed with Bionic Commando! 2.5D high speed platformer that feels like a shmup at times! This Japanese only PS2 release is a massive hidden gem! Tight controls and tons of room for skillfull play.
